A Bit More To Do
Captain Paul Stewart announced at the AGM that I’d be taking on an expanded role which will involve the onboarding of new members to the club and the related marketing activities. I’m delighted to take on this additional responsibility and have already been doing some of the work as part of the handover with our secretarial team. This allows Paul and Rachael to work on the day-to-day elements of the club whilst I do the proactive stuff. So far in 2024 we’ve had around 30 new members join us which is up on the same period last year. I’m working hard to get us to our desired membership numbers but nothing beats a personal referral so if you have friends, family or workmates who are considering a new club for whatever reason please point them in my direction. I won’t embarrass them here but there’s a couple of members who’ve already done this…you know who you are…thank you.
I’d encourage you to give our new members a warm welcome and if you’re a new member please make yourself at home and make the most of Fereneze in whatever way suits you.
My fellow Club Champion Mark Carlton had already very kindly approached me after the Prizegiving in October saying he’d like to get involved in some of the Match stuff so I’m extremely pleased to say that Mark will be supporting me this season. He’s got some great ideas too. There will be a few weeks where Mark will deputise for me. All I’d ask is that you support him the way you’ve supported me over the last couple of years…..AND DON’T BE GIVING HIM ANY MATCH CHAT WHEN HE’S GOLFING! (well competitively anyway)
Spring Has Sprung…..Somebody Tell the Weather
I am so NOT qualified to talk about the weather and how it impacts grass growing, one look at my garden would tell you that, but what I do know is the course has held up really quite well through the winter months and many of you have been complimentary of how good the greens have been for the time of year. Despite some sunshine last week the weekend was bitter and this time of year can see an extended period of cold east winds which sometimes has the course go that kind of yellowy colour and it’s not unusual to see snow in March. We trust in Kevin and the team though so let’s hope the weather’s kind to us and we can get going in April with the course showing some promise for the remainder of spring into summer.
2024’s First Winners
Today drew a line under our annual winter competition with the final being played today with Simons Sharks (Simon Leonard & Andy Reid) taking on Bernie’s Bandits (Bernie Wood & Sam Cooley) with Simon and Andy running out comfortable winners in the end by a 6&5 margin. Bernie (The Bear) was telling me he’s more Brown than Polar so today’s Arctic conditions weren’t to his liking. Well done to Simon and Andy…first bit of silverware tucked away and an invite to the Prizegiving already.
If Carling Did Golf Club Fixture Lists
As I said in one or two emails last year I think we’re a pretty modest bunch at Fereneze and penned my own motto for us “We’re Better Than We Think We Are” or “Sumus melius quam cogitamus sumus” . I think that would look the business surrounding our logo!! Anyway….let me break with our modesty and say I reckon we have the best fixture list anywhere, plenty of team and individual events and stacks of different formats. Find out more below:
Eclectic
Speaking of competitions I’ve re-introduced an Eclectic for this season. Qualifying events will be every 2nd Thursday and one Sunday per month. Each qualifying event will be on a four way rotation of a Stableford, Birdie, Skins and Canadian Skins. There will be winners for the individual events but the competition is all about the season long Eclectic.
Hopefully we get a decent spell of weather between now and next month and your game’s ready for the season ahead….I know I’m looking forward to delivering you the best possible competition experience…you just deliver the low scores.
