Having won the Renfrewshire Club Team Championship earlier in the year at Caldwell our County Cup squad thought they’d make it a Fereneze double in the 2 team championships held by Renfrewshire Golf Union. Having won through their qualifying section with a final day whitewash of braes neighbours Paisley (when they didn’t even know they could qualify!!) they secured a spot in yesterdays final with a win over Old Course Ranfurly in the semi final at Cochrane Castle last Sunday.
Yesterdays triumph over Port Glasgow took place at Ranfurly Castle with the team of Andy Duncan, Willie Elliott, Andy Reid, Frank Dynes and Lachie Cunningham (pictured receiving the trophy from RGU legend Ian McCosh) tasked with bringing the trophy back to the ‘neze. Andy secured a hard fought half against the Port Glasgow champion from 3 down at one point, Willie lost at the last, his first defeat of the campaign, Andy making his debut in the final, lost giving Port Glasgow a 2.5-0.5 lead. Frank pulled a point back though with an impressive 4&3 victory and maintained his 100% record in the event winning 3 from 3. That left the fate of the match in Lachie’s hands or Mr Steadfast and Reliable as County Cup manager and Past Captain Ian McArthur describes him. He didn’t disappoint winning the final point and allowing us to be crowned champions down to holes won after a 2.5-2.5 tie. That’s our 3rd victory in this event I believe with wins in 1986 and 2008.
Huge well done to Past Captain Ian McArthur who’s lead our county cup team for the last few years with his own unique management style…I’ve been “privileged” to witness it in the WhatsApp group this year and I hope he’ll continue in the role as we look to make a bit of history and retain the trophy next year.
This is a terrific tournament that provides an opportunity for golfers of all ability levels to represent the club. Get some scores posted in competitions early next season to attract the attention of the gaffer if you’re keen to play.
It’s very much a squad game over the season given the number of games played so as well as those playing in the final the players below all played their part in getting us the victory by featuring in games.
