We’re approaching the midpoint of the season for our Fleming Watson, Brand Putter and Senior League teams. How’s it going so far?

After a winning start in their first game of the league, the juniors faced a couple of tough matches. First up was an away to Williamwood. It is always hard playing away, especially with many of our players not having played the course before.
Aaron McGuire playing up a spot in the second game due to the absence of Zak, played some great golf in securing a half point. James and Evan McGill both played some nice golf but were definitely up against it in both their games but the boys kept going but were both defeated. Evan Macaulay was still battling away in the 5th game- the game swung many times throughout the match- Evan was dormy 2 down playing the 17th but managed to take his opponent down the last but being narrowly beaten.
Lucas playing number 6 and playing a boy off a much lower handicap had a battling match- Lucas was 2 down during the game but he was determined to keep going and kept fighting back- holing a great 10 foot putt on 17 to be all square playing the last. A gutsy up and down from the side of the green secured a win for Lucas and point for the team.
Well done to young Kerr MacFarlane playing some fabulous golf in the reserve match to win 4&3.
Although the team lost 4.5 – 1.5- the boys showed great team spirit and great attitude and that’s all we ask.
On Friday 23rd May we faced Cathkin Braes at home. This was always going to be a tough game with Cathkin Braes being a very strong team and we had both Ashton and Zak missing. However, the boys stepped up to the challenge with every player playing two spots higher in the team. With the first 4 games being scratch games and Cathkin Braes highest handicap in these games being 4, we knew we were definitely up against it.
Well done to Aaron relishing the challenge of playing number one, he played some brilliant golf, however, his opponents short game was incredible and with this edged out Aaron on the 17th. In the game behind James was holding his own, playing a boy with a much lower handicap- there was never more than one hole in the match until the 17th when the boy seeing out the match.
Evan Macaulay playing his first scratch match against a boy off 2 new he was going to have to play his A game and that he did. Evan played some great golf and took a 2 hole lead after 13 holes, however, after a couple of missed short putts and a brilliant birdie from his opponent on 17, he was narrowly beaten, but a fantastic effort from the youngster.
Young Lucas was loving having the opportunity to play for a point again, he played some brilliant golf with a super 20ft putt to win the 12th , followed by a great 4 at 13 to win his match 6&5.
Kerr MacaFarlane playing for his first point- came up trumps in a very tight match. All square playing the last, he kept his nerve and added a second point for Fereneze.
It was a home defeat but against an extremley strong team, and very young team for ourselves. I can’t credit the boys enough on their attitude and giving their all.
Today (Sunday 1st June) we played our 4th league game away to Pollok. After 2 defeats the boys were determined to get back to winning ways- it wouldn’t be easy away from home.
Ashton was playing for the county so was unable to play so in stepped Zak to play number 1. Zak took up the challenge. It was a very tight game, the game swinging both ways throughout- a half point was a fair result.
Aaron McGuire with a new 3 wood, kept his driver in the bag and that game plan seemed to work. All square thru 16 holes, Aaron played a superb second shot into 16 to take a one hole lead. The 17th was playing tough with gusting winds, Aaron hit a great tee shot but just went though the back but made a great up and down to win the first point of the day.
James in the game behind was having a great battle with his playing partner- never more than one hole in it. All square after 16, James hit a good tee shot onto the 17th green, but his opponent followed, putting it to 3 feet and to take a one hole lead up the last. A half at the last meant a narrow defeat for James.
Whilst James was playing up the last Evan Macaulay was beaten on the 16th, he played some solid golf but giving too many shots today.
The overall match was getting very close, Evan McGill was all square after 16, so we knew it was coming down to him and Lucas.
Lucas played great, holing a 15ft putt for a 4 at 16 to see out his match and a 4&2 victory.
This meant the match was 2.5-2.5 with only Evan McGills game to finish.
At 17, Evan’s opponent played first putting his tee shot in the bunker- Evan very sensibly hit the middle of the green putting the pressure on his opponent. Evan made a great 2 putt to take a 1 hole lead up the last. A half up the last meanta 1 hole victory for Evan and a 3.5-2.5 win for Fereneze.
Everyone was delighted with the away victory and are looking forward to our next match against Cathcart Castle at home on Sunday 8th June.

Fereneze has started well in the this seasons seniors friendship league and currently sit joint top along with Whitecraigs. A resounding 6-0 points win last week at home to Williamwood helped secure that position after a solid 3 points gained in week 2 at East Ren. While still early days with only 4 weeks played, the team are in a good position to hopefully push on from there and retain the title they won last year.
Next up is a home match v Pollok.

The Brand Putter team has had a decent start to the 2025 Brand Putter League season. They’ve played four matches so far—winning both of their home games, which shows they’re strong when playing on familiar ground. These wins have helped us stay in the middle of the league table and just about in touch with the leaders.
However, our away matches haven’t gone as well. We’ve lost both games played away from home and haven’t picked up any points on the road yet. Both games have been tighter than the result suggests with a few of the games going down to the last hole or 2. Overall, we’ve played 32 individual games across all matches, winning 13, drawing 5, and losing 14. This shows we’re competitive, but there’s still room to improve.
Right now, Fereneze is sitting in the middle of the table with 8 points. We’re tied with Bonnyton and Whitecraigs, so it’s a close race. If we can improve our away form and get a victory or 2, we have a good chance of moving up in the standings as the season continues.
